India have lost the inaugural World Test Championship final against New Zealand. While many started blaming their poor show, former India captain and the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly backed them as their journey to the final was praiseworthy.

Throughout the WTC cycle, they have given us some amazing wins, like the win against West Indies, home series against South Africa and Bangladesh, including the first-ever Day/Night Test. Although they lost to New Zealand 0-2, they registered convincing wins against Australia Down Under and then against England at home earlier this year.

And, Sourav Ganguly termed India’s performance in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar trophy as their ‘highlight’ performance in the campaign as well. “I think their [series] win against Australia was the highlight for me. Australia is always a strong team, and beating them in at home was a huge [achievement] by India. With key players missing out, it was huge that their replacements delivered. India has played consistently well and that is why they are in the finals,” Ganguly told The Week Magazine in an interview.

However, many said the winner should not be determined in a one-off game and it should be a best-of-three final as well. India head coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli have also backed it as well. While talking about that, Sourav Ganguly had said earlier: “It is too early to say. Let this season finish. The ICC will look at a lot of things. At this stage, I would rather wait before saying anything.”

“It is a very good concept for sure. I think Test cricket is the biggest and strongest form of cricket and it should have a final. As far as the one-off Test as a final is concerned, it is the first [edition]. Things will be looked into for the future. The ICC will get feedback from all stakeholders,” Sourav Ganguly concluded.
