Indian Cricketers Join PM Narendra Modi In ‘Cheer4India’ Campaign For Tokyo Olympics-bound Indians

Indian cricketers have joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi in extending their support to the Indian athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Virat Kohli, Mithali Raj, Rohit Sharma and other Indian star cricketers are backing the Indian contingent to do well at the summer Olympics.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dropped the video on their official Twitter handle, where several Indian cricketers including Virat Kohli, Mithali Raj, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol were seen saying ‘Cheer 4 India’ for Indian athletes that will be participating in the Olympics.

“The BCCI proudly joins the Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri @narendramodi in extending our wholehearted support to the Team India Athletes @Tokyo2020. They have trained hard and are raring to go. Let us get together and #Cheer4India,” BCCI tweeted.

Over 100 athletes from India have qualified for the Olympics, which was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event gets underway on July 23 amid strict health safety protocols.

India’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh and Olympic Bronze Medalist MC Mary Kom will be India’s flag-bearer during the opening ceremony while wrestler Bajrang Punia is named to hold the Indian tri-colour at the closing ceremony on August 8.

“The flagbearers for the Indian contingent of Tokyo 2020 for the opening ceremony on July 23rd are Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh. The flagbearer for the Indian contingent at the closing ceremony on August 8 will be Bajrang Punia,” IOA President Narinder Batra said in an official letter.

IOA President Narinder Batra also confirmed that the total contingent for the Olympics would be around 126 athletes and 75 officials. The contingent has 56 per cent of men and 44 per cent of women. It has 76 quota places and will compete in about 85 medal positions in Tokyo. The Indian contingent will depart for Tokyo on July 17.

In view of the raging COVID-19 cases, the Tokyo Olympics will be held under a state of emergency in Japan without spectators from July 23 to August 8.
