The fifth match of the Commonwealth Bank Series in 2012 between India and Sri Lanka at Adelaide ended in a thrilling tie. With Mahendra Singh Dhoni on strike and Lasith Malinga to bowl, India needed four runs to win from the last ball. Dhoni and his non-striker in Umesh Yadav ran three runs to make sure that India do not lose the match.
Earlier in the day, Mahela Jayawardene, the then Sri Lankan captain, had won the toss and elected to bat. Sri Lanka ended up scoring 236-9 in 50 overs. Dinesh Chandimal, who came in to bat at No. 4, top-scored with 81 (91), including six fours and a six. For India, R Vinay Kumar, Ravichandran Ashwin and Irfan Pathan picked up three, two and one wicket respectively.
India lost wickets at regular intervals in the form of Sachin Tendulkar (15), Virat Kohli (15) and Rohit Sharma (15). Gautam Gambhir held one end tied as he top-scored with 91 (106), including six fours. Dhoni scored an unbeaten 58 (69) with the help of three fours and a six.
