During the second day of the ongoing opening Test of the 5-match series between England and India, the opener, KL Rahul, and the deputy skipper, Ajinkya Rahane was involved in a huge mix-up which resulted in the latter losing his wicket in the afternoon session. However, a lot of credit for the dismissal goes to Jonny Bairstow who hit the bullseye at the bowler’s end.
It all happened on the second delivery of the 44th over bowled by Ollie Robinson when Rahul defended the ball towards the backward point, where Jonny Bairstow collected the ball quickly. Still in the act of defending the ball, Rahul’s footwork was perhaps perceived as a signal to take a quick run by Rahane.

As a result, the non-striker was quick to respond and in no time he was halfway down the pitch with a complete commitment to the run without any second thought. While Rahul clearly refused the single, it was all too late for Rahane to go back to his crease especially after considering the distance he had traveled to complete a run.
With Jonny Bairstow putting on display a direct hit, there wasn’t even a need for the on-field umpire to refer to the third umpire. As a result, the Indain team was reduced from 97/0 to 112/2 within a span of 37 deliveries.

It was right before the lunch break that India opening batsman Rohit Sharma (36) played a pull shot on Robinson’s delivery to England all-rounder Sam Curran at fine leg. After the break, veteran England pacer James Anderson sent back Cheteshwar Pujara (4) and Virat Kohli (0) on successive deliveries to trigger a collapse for the Indian team.

Here is how the Indain fans reacted to the incident:
India’s troubles at Trent Bridge mount. Rahane run out, From 97-0 to 112-4 is massive collapse. K L Rahul, default opener because of injuries to Gill and Agarwal, is only one to come to terms in conditions helping England’s bowlers

Unbelievably daft run out! 😡
Rahane had a close shave while taking an unnecessary risky run just moments ago & then after K L Rahul clearly denied the run Rahane ran blindly.
Panicking & how! 😤#IndvsEng— Sushant Mehta (@SushantNMehta) August 5, 2021
Going into the Test against New Zealand at Wellington in Feb 2020 Ajinkya Rahane held the world record for most Test innings without being involved in a run out – 105. He has been involved in 4 runs outs in 21 innings since then.

Risky running and Rahane pays the price. A direct-hit sees him walk back after adding 5 runs to the board. #TeamIndia in deep trouble.
