Earlier in the game, Mi skipper, Rohit Sharma decided to bowl first. While DC made just one change in their XI as Prithvi Shaw came in for Lalit Yadav, MI made a couple of changes as Dewald Brevis and Hrithik Shokeen came in for Stubbs and Sanjay Yadav. MI managed to restrict DC to an average score of 159/7 owing to some contributions from Pant and Rovman Powell.

While chasing an average total of 160 runs, MI openers, started slowly as they were 27/1 after the first six overs as they lost their skipper quite early. However, in the 12th over of the chase, Rishabh Pant dropped a sitter off a skier and a lost the chance to dismiss Dewald Brevis. However, in the next over, Shardul got the wicket of Brevis.
