The newly added Gujarat Titans (GT) side scripted history by winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in their very first attempt. The GT side has played excellent cricket throughout the tournament and won the final by seven wickets as well. In the final encounter against Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat chased down 131 in 18.1 overs with opener Shubman Gill finishing in style with a maximum. He pulled West Indies pace bowler, Obed McCoy, for a six over the square leg on the first ball of the 19th over and finished the chase for the new entrants.

However, after Shubman Gill did that, the official Twitter account of Gujarat Titans shared a post drawing a comparison between their title win and India’s 2011 World Cup victory as well, where the then India captain MS Dhoni won the game with a six as well. Notably, GT’s head coach Ashish Nehra was a part of that World Cup-winning squad and Gary Kirsten, who is now associated with the Gujarat team, was the Team India head coach during the 2011 World Cup as well. Meanwhile, Lasith Malinga and Kumar Sangakkara, who were a part of Sri Lanka playing XI against India at that time, are now part of the Rajasthan Royals camp as well.

“Number 7 jersey. Finishing with a 6. Gary and Nehraji celebrating. Beating Sanga and Malinga’s team. Where have we seen this before?”, Gujarat Titans tweeted as well.

However, after the win, Shubman Gill said: “It means a lot. After winning the Under-19 World Cup, winning the IPL is just as big. It is my fourth year. I wanted to be there till the end and that was the talk with the coaches. Glad I took them over the line. Our bowlers bowled really well to restrict them to 130. We wanted to keep them under 150 but fortunately, it was much lesser.”
