Cricket is a sport that is popular all over the world. Five of the seven continents have at least one nation that is official in the sport. Recently, the ICC has also started to introduce the game to the countries which have lesser collections of the game. In such a situation, it is not surprising if players from the same family play for different countries. On that note, in this article, We take a look at seven international cricketers whose relatives played for another country.
#1 James Pattinson (Aus) & Darren Pattinson (Eng) – Brother
James Pattinson’s elder brother Darren Pattinson has played a Test for England. A controversial selection, Darren’s English career lasted only one game. While James was born in Australia, Darren was born in England.
There was a lot of talk about James when he started. However, due to injuries, he has not been able to make anything special in his career so far. The former Mumbai Indians cricketer is therefore part of this list of seven international cricketers whose relatives played for another country.
#2 Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) and Irfan Afridi (Uganda) – Nephew
Interestingly, a relative of Shahid Afridi has also played cricket, that too for a less established country like Uganda. Irfan Afridi has been a part of the Ugandan team in the World Cricket League Division tournament. Like Shahid, Irfan is also an all-rounder. He was once banned from bowling after the ICC deemed his action illegal. Since then not much news has come about Irfan.
#3 Ajay Jadeja (India) and Dalipsinhji, Ranjitsinhji (England) – great-grandfather
Belonging to a royal family, both Ranjitsinhji and Dalipsinhji played first-class cricket in England. Later he also wore the English jersey. Both also have a tournament named after each of them in India. Dalipsinhji is the nephew of Ranjitsinhji. Another Indian cricketer Hanumant Singh was also the nephew of Ranjitsinhji. Inderjitsinhji was the cousin of Hanumant. Ajay Jadeja is the great-grandson of Dulipsinhji. Hanumant, Inderjitsinhji and Ajay all played for India.
#4 Asif Iqbal (Pakistan) and Ghulam Ahmed (India) – nephew
Ghulam Ahmed is a former Indian cricketer who captained the team in Tests. He also served as the secretary of BCCI for a few years. An off-spinner, he played 22 Tests for India.
Ghulam’s nephew Asif was a popular Pakistani cricketer. Asif even captained Pakistan for some time. Asif played both ODI and Test cricket for his country. Ghulam is also the great-grandfather of tennis player Sania Mirza. Sania is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
#5 Khalid Wazir (Pakistan) and Wazir Ali (India) – Son
Wazir Ali played seven Tests for India. Born in Punjab, Wazir was a right-handed batsman and medium pace bowler. His brother Nazir Ali also played cricket for India. Wazir’s son Khalid played two Tests for Pakistan. Khalid was an all-rounder and interestingly, he did not play any first-class cricketer after the age of 19.
#6 Darren Lehmann (Australia) – Craig White (England) – Brother-in-law
Darren Lehmann is a former Australian cricketer who played both Tests and ODIs for his country. He won the World Cup in 1999 and 2003. The left-handed batsman has also served as the head coach of Australia. Lehman is married to Craig White’s sister. White has represented England in 30 Tests and 51 ODIs. The two played together in Yorkshire. White is also a certified coach. Hence, the pair is part of this list of seven international cricketers whose relatives played for another country.
#7 Derek Pringle (England) and Don Pringle (East Africa) – Father
After playing 30 Tests and 44 ODIs, Derek Pringle did well with the England team. Kenya-born Derek was a fast bowler and was also a part of the 1992 World Cup. Derek’s father Don Pringle played cricket for East Africa. He was part of the inaugural Cricket World Cup in 1975. However, he died in a car accident in the same year.
