Jay Shah Confirms India’s Women And Men Cricketers Will Get Same Match Fees

BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Thursday made a joyful announcement for the Indian women cricketers as he confirmed that the women in blue will get the same match fee as their male counterparts as the board has decided to counter the pay discrimination. Shah in a series of tweets said that the Indian cricket board is implementing a pay equity policy for its contracted women players.

In his tweet announcing the same, Jay Shah said, “I’m pleased to announce BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted BCCI Women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian Cricket.”

He further added, “The BCCI Women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Test (INR 15 lakhs), ODI (INR 6 lakhs), T20I (INR 3 lakhs). Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support. Jai Hind.”

Former Indian skipper, Mithali Raj welcomed the decision, saying: “This is a historic decision for women’s cricket in India! The pay equity policy along with the WIPL next year, we are ushering into a new era for women’s cricket in India. Thank you Jay Shah Sir and the BCCI for making this happen. Really happy today.”

The BCCI recently at its 91st annual general meeting approved hosting the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) from next year onwards. The India women’s team under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur reclaimed its Asia Cup crown for the seventh time and also clinched a historic 3-0 ODI series clean sweep in and against England amid a run-out controversy and the first-ever silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Ever since India’s performance in the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup in England, where they lost to the hosts in the final, the popularity of women’s cricket has seen an unprecedented rise in the country.
