The flamboyant Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav is witnessing a purple patch in the T20 World Cup 2022. He has dazzled the Australian crowd with his exceptional range of strokes. Yadav played one of his best knocks for India against Zimbabwe in the team’s final match of the Super-12 stage, playing a fiery knock of 61* off 25 balls, saving India from stuttering innings. Like he usually does when he comes out to bat, he played shots in all parts of the ground and shocked the opposition captain by piercing the field settings.

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Surykumar Yadav explained the science behind his batting and said, “I used to play a lot of rubber ball cricket during my school days. We used to play on hard cement tracks. People used to just come running and chuck the ball as fast as they could. One side, the boundary used to be around 75-80 meters and on the other side, behind the batter, it used to be 70 meters.”

He further added, “So when you are playing with the rubber ball on hard cement, it’s easy for you to scoop, pull, play an uppercut, then play a slice over point. All these strokes which you see me play, square of the wicket and behind the square, have come from that. I have never practiced this in the nets, never against any bowler or bowling machine. So it has all come from playing with the rubber ball.”

Asked about if he has more than one shot available for every delivery, Suryakumar Yadav said that he premeditates a few of his shots, but changes his shot at the last minute if the bowler tricks him into something else.

Explaining the same, Suryakumar Yadav said, “You do not have any other option when it is coming straight at your body. Instead of getting hit, you can try something. I actually think of playing two, three strokes before the ball gets delivered. If the bowler bowls here I will play this shot, if he bowls there, I will play this shot. I keep thinking the same when I am at the non-striker’s end. If the bowler does not bowl where I want, then I am stuck, but then you have to adjust.”

India will now be locking horns with England in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022.
