Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja has been sacked from the role on Wednesday, December 21. The decision seems to have been taken after Pakistan suffered a humiliating whitewash in the three-match Test series at home. Ramiz Raja, who took over the role in September 2021, oversaw the proceedings of the PCB during 2 T20 World Cups and a 50-over Women’s World Cup.

According to the latest reports, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sherif, who is also the patron of the board, cleared the appointment of Najam Sethi as the new chairman of the PCB. Under the Board constitution, the prime minister has the right to give nominations for the chairman, and one of them is then elected by the board of governors.

Notably, Najam Sethi is a seasoned administrator. Speculation was rife over the last few days that a group of people was unhappy with Ramiz Raja, in the PCB and was working to get him removed from the top job in the PCB. Questions were being asked of Raja’s administration as Pakistan lost 4 consecutive Tests at home, failing to win even one Test at home in their last two series against Australia and England.

Raja’s defense of the pitches that were prepared for the home series helped raise a few eyebrows as the docile tracks were criticized by a majority of the cricket fraternity in Pakistan.

Surprisingly, despite a strong campaign against Ramiz when Shahbaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister and a new government came into power in April, the lobby against the PCB chief failed to achieve its objective. Raja was allowed to continue and even represent PCB at the International Cricket Council.
