Punjab Kings Ropes In Sunil Joshi As The Spin Bowling Coach

Former Indian spinner, Sunil Joshi will be serving as the spin-bowling coach of Punjab Kings for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. The former finalists took to social media to announce the appointment. Sunil Joshi will join the support staff, headed by World Cup-winning coach, Trevor Bayliss. The 60-year-old Australian tactician was appointed as the head coach for the IPL 2023 season.

Baylis came in as the replacement of Anil Kumble, who was sacked as the head coach after PBKS failed to live up to expectations in IPL 2022, finishing 6th out of 10 teams. Sunil Joshi, who played 15 Tests and 69 ODIs for India and picked 110 international wickets announced his retirement from all formats of the game in 2012. Notably, Joshi plied his trade for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008.

Sunil Joshi had been India men’s senior team’s chief selector before he was replaced by Chetan Sharma in 2022. Joshi continued to be part of the selection committee until the BCCI went for an overhaul after the T20 World Cup in 2022.

Punjab Kings also decided to change their support staff completely as they also appointed former India batter Wasim Jaffer as their batting coach for the 2023 season. Jaffer had previously worked with the PBKS franchise as well. Charl Langeveldt was named as their bowling coach for the next season.

Shikhar Dhawan will be leading PBKS in the new season as the senior Indian opener replacing Mayank Agarwal, who was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2023 mega auction. Mayank was bought by SunRisers Hyderabad for INR 8.25 crore.

PBKS spent a record-breaking sum of INR 18.5 crores to bought the services of England all-rounder Sam Curran. The left-arm pacer became the most expensive buy in the history of the IPL auction.
