Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel has said that Shubman Gill is India’s new all-format star after he scored his second Test hundred against Australia in the Ahmedabad Test on Saturday. Gill was in sublime form on the day as he took on the Australian attack and scored 128 runs off 235 balls before being dismissed by Nathan Lyon.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Patel said that the 23-year-old is definitely India’s new star across formats. The former cricketer said that Gill plays differently in all three formats and said he showed the Test cricket temperament on day three as well. Patel also said that runs weren’t flowing for Gill recently but he didn’t lose his focus and played a big knock.

“Shubman Gill is definitely India’s new all format star. There is no doubt in that. If you look at his hundred today, we have seen his double hundred in ODIs, the century in T20Is. Everywhere he is batting differently. If you see explosive batting in T20Is, then ODIs you see him batting with tempo. And today, in Test cricket, he showed his temperament as well.”

“He has technique, he is a talented player. We have seen all that. But today, he showed actual Test cricket temperament. Runs weren’t coming for him and that has never happened in his career. When he played in Australia also, there was a flow of runs for him. It wasn’t happening here but he didn’t lose his concentration and has played a big innings,” said Parthiv Patel.

“Absolutely. Everything is going well in his head and that’s why he has played such an innings. At the beginning, the strokes he was making, the ball was hard and was coming onto the bat well. So he knew at that time stroke making would be easy. When the game became soft and the ball started to reverse, then he started to pay more attention to singles. When it was an attacking field, he released the pressure with two brilliant boundaries. To me, his thinking is big. The temperament he has shown. He was playing according to the deliveries,” he again added.

“He wasn’t trying to force anything new. Cameron Green made two mistakes, he hit two boundaries. When Nathan Lyon came in, he got out in Indore playing a big shot. Yesterday, he hit him for a six and today also when he came onto the attack, Gill played a big shot. So he was looking to put pressure on Lyon,” concluded Parthiv Patel.
