Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer expressed surprise and disbelief at Virat Kohli’s shot selection during the crucial stages of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, where India suffered a resounding 209-run defeat against Australia. Kohli’s dismissal on the final day of the match left Jaffer stunned as he questioned the decision-making behind the shot. On Day 5, India began their chase of a daunting target of 444 runs, with Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease.
Kohli’s wicket fell during the morning session when he attempted to go after a wide delivery outside the off stump from Australian pacer Scott Boland. Jaffer couldn’t understand why Kohli chose to chase a ball that was pitched so far away from his off stump.

Reflecting on Kohli’s approach, Jaffer acknowledged his composed start on the fourth day, where he displayed restraint and selected his shots carefully. However, Jaffer expressed surprise at Kohli’s stroke on the fifth morning when Australia persistently tested him with consecutive wide deliveries. The plan eventually worked, as Kohli edged Boland’s delivery, resulting in a catch by Steve Smith, and ending his innings at 49 runs.
Jaffer also highlighted Kohli’s dismissal in the first innings, where he fell victim to a brilliant outswinger from Australian pacer Mitchell Starc. The ball found the outside edge of Kohli’s bat and went straight into the safe hands of Steve Smith at slips.
With the defeat in the WTC final, Team India will now shift their focus to the upcoming cycle of the championship. They are set to commence their journey with a two-match Test series against West Indies, scheduled to begin on July 12 at Windsor Park in Dominica.
