Due to heightened security concerns during the ongoing Just Stop Oil protests, a minor confrontation occurred between the head coach of the England men’s Test team, Brendon McCullum, and a security guard at Headingley during the third Ashes Test. McCullum was denied entry into the venue as the security guard did not recognize him and he did not possess the correct pass.

The situation escalated into an argument as Brendon McCullum emphasized the importance of his presence, particularly with England trailing Australia 0-2 in the series. The incident took place following a previous disruption at the Lord’s Test when protestors entered the venue and threw orange powder onto the pitch.

In response, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) tightened security measures at Headingly. On the first day of the third Test, a couple of individuals were denied entry to the venue due to suspicions of potential disruption. They were wearing Just Stop Oil t-shirts and carrying bags, raising concerns among the security personnel.

Not limited to cricket, the Just Stop Oil protests have caused disruptions in other sporting events as well. During the Wimbledon Championships 2023, the play was halted twice as protesters threw orange confetti glitter and jigsaw puzzles onto the courts.

Three arrests were made in relation to the incident, and the individuals are scheduled to appear before the City of Westminster Magistrates in August. The World Snooker Championship in Sheffield also faced interruptions from the same activist group earlier this year.
