The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 bore witness to an amusing and unusual incident involving Johnson Charles, a prominent West Indies batter. Charles found himself in a rather comical situation during the match, where he nearly dislodged his own stumps using his own helmet. The peculiar sequence of events unfolded as Charles endeavored to execute a scoop shot that would send the ball sailing above his head.

Much to everyone’s surprise, including his own, the execution of the shot went awry, resulting in the ball striking his chin. This unexpected impact caused his helmet to be forcefully dislodged from its position and sent hurtling dangerously close to the stumps. In a quick and instinctive response, Charles utilized his foot to alter the trajectory of the helmet, thereby averting what could have been a truly bizarre dismissal.

This incident transpired during a high-stakes CPL encounter between the St. Lucia Kings and the Trinbago Knight Riders. Charles, an integral part of the St. Lucia Kings lineup, managed to avoid serious injury as the ball veered towards his chin instead of soaring over the wicketkeeper’s head.

While Charles managed to sidestep a potential injury, the situation also saw him narrowly escaping the unusual possibility of being dismissed in a hit-wicket fashion, whereby his own helmet could have struck the stumps. This incident took place in the twelfth over of the match, with Dwayne Bravo delivering a full toss that prompted Charles to attempt an unconventional shot over the wicketkeeper.

Following a swift medical assessment, Johnson Charles was given the green light to continue his innings. Impressively, he displayed remarkable resilience and skill, contributing 37 runs from 31 balls to the St. Lucia Kings’ total. Charles’ performance significantly aided his team in setting a competitive target of 167 runs for the Trinbago Knight Riders.

However, the Knight Riders encountered substantial difficulties during their chase, succumbing to pressure and collapsing with a total score of just 113 runs within a mere 15 overs. Post-match, Faf du Plessis, the captain of the St. Lucia Kings, voiced his satisfaction with the outcome. In a post-game statement, he remarked, “Happy with the result. Obviously sad I’m leaving. We felt we should’ve got more in the first innings. We were just saying to hold the nerve,” expressing contentment at the team’s performance.
