India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, dismissed the notion that the Asia Cup 2023 would serve as a mere “final fitness test” before the upcoming World Cup. As he addressed the media on the eve of the India vs. Pakistan clash in Pallekele, Rohit Sharma emphasized the significance of the tournament and its rich historical legacy.

“By no means, this is a fitness test or any other thing. This is a tournament played between the top 6 Asian teams. It’s a very big tournament for all of us, without a doubt. In the past, it has had so much history,” Rohit Sharma stated.

India’s preparations for the Asia Cup have been overshadowed by uncertainties surrounding player availability due to injuries. Head coach Rahul Dravid had previously outlined their plans for a middle-order lineup bound for the World Cup 18 months ago. However, injuries to key players like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant have complicated matters. KL Rahul, for instance, will miss the first two matches of the tournament due to a fresh niggle incurred during his rehabilitation process.

In contrast, Shreyas Iyer, who has recovered from a back injury, is set to return to the side for the first time since March. Despite missing the IPL, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain is ready to take his place in the XI against Pakistan.

India’s cautious approach extends to their star pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, who returned to action in Ireland last month after an 11-month injury layoff. Prasidh Krishna, also in the 17-man squad, has returned to international cricket after a year-long hiatus.

Rohit Sharma expressed confidence in the quality of pace-bowling in both camps and hoped that the likes of Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj would remain fit and perform well for the team over the next two months.

“All 6 bowlers are great bowlers, they have proven in world cricket how good they are. Speaking of Shami, Siraj, and Bumrah… especially Bumrah who is coming back from an injury after a long time. He played in Ireland, he looked good there,” Rohit Sharma commented.
