Piyush Chawla, the seasoned Indian spinner, has shared his perspective on India’s middle-order conundrum and thrown his support behind Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul over Shreyas Iyer in the Indian World Cup squad. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) All India Senior Men’s Selection Committee recently unveiled the 15-member squad for the highly anticipated cricketing event.
Chawla, like many cricket fans and pundits, wasted no time in sharing his insights on the squad, particularly focusing on the middle-order dynamics. He raised questions about Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion while endorsing Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul for crucial roles in the middle order.
“We are talking about both of them, why not Shreyas Iyer? Shreyas Iyer’s place should also be questioned. Ishan (Kishan) cannot remain in the reserves now because of the way he has batted in the top order. People had a question about how he would bat in the middle order, and the way he batted in the middle order after coming into bat in a tough situation, he is going through good form and he solves the problem of the absence of a left-hander in the middle order, which we often talk about,” Piyush expressed during a discussion on Star Sports.

“So, he is straightaway a walk-in for me. If we talk about KL Rahul, his track record is so good, and he has done so well over the years,” he continued.
Ishan Kishan has undeniably been in sensational form with the bat, amassing impressive scores of 82, 77, 55, and 52 in his last four ODIs. In contrast, Shreyas Iyer made his comeback appearance following a back injury but failed to post significant runs for his team against Pakistan.
Furthermore, Piyush Chawla, the veteran leg spinner, emphasized the importance of backing Ishan Kishan as the specialist wicketkeeper, particularly when India plays in Chennai and Lucknow.

“You have asked who should be the wicketkeeper. When India will play in Chennai and Lucknow, the No. 1 wicketkeeper will be a specialist wicketkeeper, and Ishan Kishan is a specialist wicketkeeper,” Chawla highlighted.
