Team India has received a significant boost ahead of their crucial Super Four game against Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Shreyas Iyer, who had been sidelined due to a back spasm in the previous two encounters against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, made a promising return to the nets during an optional training session on Thursday. This development suggests that Iyer is likely to be available for India’s next game against Bangladesh.

Iyer had been a vital part of India’s campaign in the group-stage matches against Pakistan and Nepal but was sidelined just before the encounter with Pakistan due to a back spasm. In his absence, KL Rahul filled the middle-order position after returning from an injury layoff.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided an update on Iyer’s condition, stating that he is feeling better but has not fully recovered from the back spasm. The BCCI medical team advised him to rest, which led to his absence in the match against Sri Lanka.

“Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from a back spasm. He has been advised rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka,” the BCCI mentioned in a statement.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, had earlier revealed that Iyer’s back issue was detected during the pre-match warm-up before the Pakistan game. Consequently, KL Rahul was included in the playing XI just five minutes before the toss.

During the optional training session, Iyer engaged in some light batting practice, signaling his intention to return to the playing XI. His consistency, skill in handling spin bowling, and ability to rotate the strike have made him a valuable asset in India’s middle order. His presence will be crucial for India in both the Asia Cup and the upcoming ICC events.
