The hosting rights for the 2024 Men’s T20I World Cup have been a topic of extensive discussion in recent months. In a recent development, the Jamaican government has decided not to submit a bid to host matches for the T20I World Cup. This decision comes after a careful cost-benefit analysis, driven by limited available resources.
Sports Minister Olivia Grange acknowledged that while opting out of the bid was a difficult decision, it was a necessary one. “We had been considering the cost and source of funding of nearly half a billion dollars to host a few games in Jamaica.”

“In our cost/benefit analysis with stakeholders, we also considered the economic, social, and development impact, including the potential tourism-related impact and attendant industry benefits using year-over-year economic modeling, reconciled against current tourism performance. It was a robust exercise in which we considered different permutations, including the option not to bid,” said Olivia Grange, as quoted by Jamaica Observer.

It’s noteworthy that nearly every Caribbean destination is set to host a World Cup game except for Jamaica, Grenada, and St Kitts and Nevis. The venues for hosting the games at the T20 World Cup include Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Olivia Grange emphasized that the decision to abstain from bidding was made after careful consideration by stakeholders. She expressed understanding for the disappointment of fans who had hoped to see T20 World Cup games in Jamaica but emphasized that the best option for the Jamaican government is to invest in the sport at its grassroots level.
