England’s World Cup trophy defense is in serious jeopardy after they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup, a 100-run loss to India in Lucknow. With three league games remaining, England are now at the bottom of the points table with just 2 points. They need to finish among the top seven teams on the points table to qualify for the semi-finals. However, even that is looking unlikely at this stage.
The top seven teams at the end of the league stage will also qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be held in Pakistan. So, even if England fail to qualify for the semi-finals, they can still qualify for the Champions Trophy by finishing in the top seven.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer took a hilarious jibe at ex-England skipper Michael Vaughan on Twitter, stating that the Three Lions can “still qualify” but for the 2025 Champions Trophy by finishing among top 7 on the points table. “Cheer up @MichaelVaughan I think England can still qualify… For Champions Trophy 2025 by finishing in top 7,” Jaffer posted on microblogging site X.

Michael Vaughan replied to Jaffer’s tweet, saying that it looks like a long way off at this stage. He also said that England need a 50-over reset following their disastrous World Cup campaign in India. Vaughan wrote, “That looks a long way off at this stage Wasim…”

Michael Vaughan also praised Team India’s “high class” bowling attack, which bundled out the defending champions for 129 while defending 229.

India, the only unbeaten side in the tournament, have reclaimed the top spot with 12 points and have ensured a spot in the semi-finals. However, their final position on the table is yet to be confirmed, with other teams fighting for a top-four finish. It remains to be seen whether England can salvage their World Cup campaign and finish among the top seven teams on the points table. If they fail to do so, it will be a huge disappointment for the team and their fans.
