The match, held at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, saw skipper Rohit Sharma’s influential 87-run performance, setting a target of 229 runs. In reply, India dismissed the defending champions for just 129 runs in 34.5 overs.

Pacer Mohammed Shami was the star for India, taking four wickets for 22 runs in his seven overs. Jasprit Bumrah also shone, sending three English batters back to the pavilion. Notably, star spinner Kuldeep Yadav made a significant contribution by claiming the wickets of Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone.

After the match, Kuldeep Yadav shared his perspective with reporters, emphasizing that defeating England wasn’t a formidable task, given their underwhelming performance in the tournament. England is languishing at the bottom of the points table, with just two points from six matches. They have endured four consecutive losses and are all but out of contention for a semifinal spot.

Kuldeep Yadav remarked, “To be very honest, it was good to win, beating the defending champions. They haven’t had a great tournament so far. So it wasn’t that tough to beat England. They restricted us to 230.”

He further added, “We believed that we needed to take early wickets to stay in the game. Certainly, Jasprit (Bumrah) and Shami did that. When they were four down for just 40 runs, we focused on bowling accurately and forcing them to make mistakes.”

India’s triumph over England marked their sixth consecutive win in the ODI World Cup 2023, positioning them at the top of the points table with a total of 12 points. The team’s next challenge awaits them on November 2, when they will face Sri Lanka in a match reminiscent of the 2011 final at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
