In a surprising twist, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled the squad for the initial two Tests against England, and the spotlight is firmly on the 22-year-old cricketer from Uttar Pradesh, Dhruv Jurel. His inclusion has captured attention, diverting it from the more established names in the lineup.
Dhruv Jurel’s ascent to the national team is a story that resonates with inspiration, rooted in humble beginnings. Recalling the early struggles, he shared a glimpse into his journey.
“I used to study in Army School. During holidays I thought about joining a cricket camp at Eklavya Stadium in Agra. I filled up the form but did not tell my dad. When he came to know, he scolded me. However, he borrowed Rs 800 to buy me a cricket bat. When I told him I needed a cricket kit, dad asked me how much it would cost. I told him about Rs six to seven thousand, and he told me to stop playing. But I was adamant and locked myself in the bathroom. Then my mom sold her gold chain and got me a cricket kit,” revealed Dhruv Jurel in an interview with Dainik Jagran.

A significant turning point in Jurel’s life occurred at the age of 14 when, denied a bat by his father, he threatened to run away from home. His mother stepped forward, making a profound sacrifice by selling her gold chain to purchase a cricket kit for her determined son.

As Jurel’s cricketing prowess gained recognition in Agra, he made a crucial move to Noida to enhance his prospects. Once again, his mother played a pivotal role, relocating with him to Noida to facilitate his cricketing journey. Steadily progressing in the sport, Jurel earned a spot in the India U19 team for the 2020 World Cup, where he served as the vice-captain.
