This altercation followed an animated chat between Ashwin and umpire Marais Erasmus at the end of day one. The nature of the disagreement carried over into the second day, creating a charged atmosphere on the field.

On the previous day, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s spectacular unbeaten century had anchored India to a solid position. Despite losing partners consistently, the opener remained steadfast, finishing the day at 336 for 6, with an unbeaten score of 179. Jaiswal’s innings featured 17 fours and 5 sixes, with his first Test century on home soil punctuated by a six off Tom Hartley.

Reflecting on his innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal stated, “I wanted to play it session by session. When they were bowling well, I just wanted to get through that spell. Initially, the wicket was damp and there was spin and bounce, with a bit of seam. I wanted to convert the loose balls and play till the end.”
