Former cricketer Suresh Raina lauded India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, comparing his leadership style to that of the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MSD). Following India’s dominant victory over England in the Ranchi Test, which secured an unassailable 3-1 series lead, Raina praised Rohit’s approach to nurturing young talent.

“He (Rohit Sharma) is the next MS Dhoni,” Suresh Raina stated in an interview with TOI. “He has done well, giving a lot of chances to youngsters just like MS Dhoni did. I played under Dhoni for a long time, and then Rohit came in and started leading from the front. He’s moving in the right direction, he’s a brilliant captain.”

MSD’s legacy as India’s captain is undeniable. Under his leadership, the team achieved historic victories, including the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the Champions Trophy. Additionally, India rose to the top of the ICC Test rankings for the first time.

Rohit, continuing India’s home dominance, has led the team to their 17th consecutive series win in their own backyard. Their last home series loss came against England in 2012-13.

This victory also solidified India’s second position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. Their point percentage jumped significantly, solidifying their lead over Australia and Bangladesh in the race to the finals.

Beyond their national team success, both Rohit and Dhoni have also led their respective IPL franchises to multiple championships: Rohit with Mumbai Indians and Dhoni with Chennai Super Kings.

When questioned about Dhoni’s potential retirement plans, Raina, who played alongside Dhoni for CSK, stated his faith in the former captain’s fitness and passion for the game. “I have no idea (about his retirement plans),” Raina said, “but he’s working hard, looking really fit. It’s up to him. He will continue to entertain fans in the yellow jersey, and I’m sure he’ll do well. He’s given a lot to cricket.”
