Veteran wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha weighed in on the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the BCCI central contracts for the 2023/24 season, emphasizing the significance of valuing domestic cricket. The BCCI’s decision to omit the duo has sparked discussions about the importance of players participating in domestic matches.

Wriddhiman Saha acknowledged the authority of the BCCI’s decision and commented, “That is BCCI’s decision and personal decision of concerned players. Forcefully, you can’t do anything.” He stressed the value of domestic cricket, considering it as the foundation for a player’s success.

Reflecting on his own approach, Wriddhiman Saha highlighted the importance of treating every match with equal significance. “Whenever I am fit, I play, even I played club matches, office matches as well. I always treat a match as a match. All matches are equal for me. If every player thinks on those lines, they will only prosper in their career, and it will be better for Indian cricket as well,” he stated.

Regarding the exclusion of Iyer and Kishan, who were recently part of the Indian side, Saha emphasized that a cricketer should appreciate the value of domestic cricket. Ishan Kishan had been absent from cricket due to personal reasons but made a comeback through the DY Patil T20 tournament. Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand, missed Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final reportedly due to back issues, despite being declared fit by the NCA.

Saha cited the example of Sarfaraz Khan, emphasizing that consistent performances in domestic cricket should be recognized. “I feel the importance of domestic cricket is always there because if I talk about Sarfaraz Khan, he had scored plenty of runs in the last 4-5 years. Definitely, he has delivered,” Wriddhiman Saha added.

The exclusion of Iyer and Kishan has raised questions about the players’ commitment to domestic cricket, and Saha’s perspective aligns with the notion that players should prioritize and value every match to prosper in their careers.
