This disciplinary action stemmed from a breach of the IPL’s code of conduct, specifically a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8, which pertains to displaying dissent towards an umpire’s decision.
Sanju Samson, who put up an impressive performance by scoring 86 runs off 46 deliveries, was dismissed in the 16th over of RR’s pursuit of 222 runs, caught at long-on by Shai Hope off Mukesh Kumar’s bowling. The catch, made perilously close to the boundary edge, sparked uncertainty as to whether Hope’s foot had made contact with the cushions.
As the on-field umpires sought clarity, TV umpire Michael Gough was tasked with scrutinizing the catch. His verdict confirmed that Hope had indeed taken the catch cleanly. However, this decision was not without contention, as Samson engaged in a protracted discussion with the on-field umpires, KN Ananthapadmanabhan and Ulhas Gandhe, before reluctantly departing from the field.

The timing of Samson’s dismissal was pivotal, given RR’s precarious position in the chase, needing 60 runs off 27 balls at the time of his departure. Reflecting on the incident, RR’s head coach Kumar Sangakkara expressed empathy towards the third umpire, acknowledging the complexity of the call.
