Rahul Tripathi was absolutely distraught after being run out during the first qualifier of IPL 2024 between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The right-handed batsman had scored a fighting fifty and was well on his way to powering SRH to a competitive total before his hopes were dashed in the 14th over.

Rahul Tripathi came to the crease early, after Mitchell Starc clean-bowled Travis Head for a duck in the very first over. SRH’s woes continued as Vaibhav Arora dismissed Abhishek Sharma in the second over, leaving them reeling at 13 for 2.

SRH’s struggles deepened before the end of the powerplay. Starc returned to dismiss Nitish Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed on consecutive deliveries, reducing SRH to a precarious 39 for 4. Tripathi and Heinrich Klaasen then provided some much-needed stability, adding 62 runs quickly for the fifth wicket, laying a foundation for a respectable total.

However, Klaasen’s dismissal in the 11th over left SRH at 101 for 5. With nine overs remaining and a well-set Tripathi still at the crease, SRH seemed poised for a good score. The tide turned dramatically in the 14th over due to a miscommunication between Tripathi and Abdul Samad.

On the second ball of the over bowled by Sunil Narine, Abdul Samad hit the ball towards Andre Russell at backward point. Russell made a superb diving stop while Samad set off for a single. Tripathi, focused on the ball, did not respond immediately. Tripathi found himself stranded in the middle of the pitch as Russell quickly got up and threw the ball to wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who whipped off the bails. The run-out was a catastrophic mix-up that left SRH’s CEO, Kavya Maran, visibly frustrated.

Rahul Tripathi departed after scoring a commendable 55 runs off 35 balls against his former team. After the dismissal, a heartbroken Tripathi was seen sitting near the stairs with his head down on his knees, seemingly crying over the unfortunate turn of events. His emotional reaction highlighted the impact of his dismissal on SRH’s chances in the crucial match.
