Despite being a standout performer for India in the ODI World Cup 2023, Shreyas Iyer found himself in a challenging position as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) excluded him from its central contract list. After the World Cup, Iyer travelled with the team for the South Africa series but unfortunately couldn’t make a significant impact.

Despite this, the team management retained their faith in him, calling him up for the first two Test matches against England. In a bid to prepare thoroughly for the Test series, Iyer decided to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. However, he struggled to find form in the initial matches.

Subsequently, the BCCI advised him to continue playing domestic cricket to regain his rhythm. Contrary to this advice, Iyer chose to skip the Ranji Trophy semi-final, citing a back spasm. This explanation was soon refuted by the National Cricket Academy (NCA), which led to friction between Iyer and the governing body.

The BCCI, displeased with his decision, consequently dropped him from the central contract list. Despite these setbacks, Iyer’s resilience shone through as he went on to lead Mumbai to their record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title. He also captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL victory, demonstrating his leadership and batting prowess.

Reflecting on the situation, Iyer revealed that the main issue was a lack of communication between him and the BCCI. He emphasized that he had wanted to take a break post-World Cup to focus on building strength and addressing specific areas of his fitness.

“I had a terrific World Cup and wanted to take a break afterward to work on my body and build strength in certain areas. Due to a lack of communication, some decisions were made that didn’t favor me,” Shreyas Iyer explained on his YouTube channel.

He further expressed, “But I realized that the bat is going to be in my hand, and it’s up to me to perform and win trophies. I decided that winning the Ranji Trophy and the IPL would be the best response to what happened in the past. Thankfully, everything fell into place, and I am grateful for how it all turned out.”

Currently, Shreyas Iyer is not a part of the Indian team setup. However, with his determination and consistent performances, it is only a matter of time before he dons the international jersey once again.
