India edged out arch-rivals Pakistan by a narrow six runs in a low-scoring thriller at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Sunday. Despite a lackluster batting performance, India’s fielding and bowling sealed the victory. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant’s acrobatic display behind the stumps was the highlight, earning him the prestigious “Best Fielder” award presented by a special guest.

Pant’s brilliance shone in the high-pressure atmosphere. The left-hander secured three sensational catches, with the dismissal of Fakhar Zaman off Hardik Pandya’s bowling being the showstopper. His commitment and athleticism drew praise from the coaching staff.

Fielding coach T Dilip lauded the team’s fielding intensity and coordination after the win. He continued the tradition established in the 2023 ODI World Cup by awarding the “Best Fielder” honor to the deserving player. For his spectacular display, Dilip invited former head coach Ravi Shastri to present the award to Pant.

“Today was a prime example of rising to the challenge,” T Dilip stated in a BCCI video. “The dedication to fielding excellence was truly remarkable. Proactive fielding is crucial in high-pressure situations. Today, we supported each other, worked as a unit, and displayed outstanding effort. This coordination is what sets us apart.”

Shastri, visibly emotional, witnessed Pant’s recovery firsthand after his horrific car accident in December 2022. He showered praise on the young cricketer’s comeback and recent performances.

“When I read about his accident and saw him in the hospital, it was tough,” Ravi Shastri said. “For him to come back and play in such a huge game like India vs Pakistan is fantastic. Everyone knew about his batting, but your wicketkeeping and range of movement are a testament to your hard work. You’re an inspiration to millions, showing how to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.”

Earlier, batting first, India managed a modest 119 runs with only Pant’s 42 off 31 balls offering resistance against a disciplined Pakistani bowling attack led by Naseem Shah (3/21) and Haris Rauf (3/21). Pakistan’s chase mirrored India’s struggles. Despite Mohammad Rizwan’s 31, they fell short by six runs, succumbing to India’s bowling attack.
