Former England captain Michael Vaughan has painted a grim picture for the current England white-ball team, suggesting they might be at their lowest point ever. Vaughan believes a complete overhaul could be on the horizon if they don’t turn things around quickly in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

England, under the leadership of Jos Buttler, finds itself in a precarious position in Group B. Facing stiff competition from teams like Australia and Scotland, they desperately need wins to secure a spot in the Super 8s. Their campaign hasn’t started well – their first match against Scotland was a washout, and their second outing ended in a disappointing 36-run defeat against Australia.

Michael Vaughan, writing in his column for The Telegraph, pointed out a stark decline in England’s bowling attack. He highlighted the leaking of 90 runs in just 10 overs against Scotland and their inability to restrict Australia to a manageable total, both contributing factors in England’s recent struggles.

Drawing a comparison to England’s dominant white-ball team of 2019 led by Eoin Morgan, Vaughan predicts a period of transition for the current squad. “In 2019 England won the World Cup playing fearless cricket, but Eoin Morgan ran that team with an iron fist,” he wrote. “Players knew where they stood and were wary of crossing him. Three years ago England were the best white-ball team in the world and everyone else was trying to copy them.”

However, Vaughan argues that complacency set in: “But you can’t sit still in sport and England did that. Other teams copied them but brought more skill and discipline to their cricket. England have to be very careful. This team is clearly coming to the end and they will go through transition after this World Cup.”

Michael Vaughan believes England is repeating the same selection and tactical mistakes that have hampered them recently.

“We should not be surprised that England are in this mess,” he wrote. “The team has been in decline for a while and is making the same mistakes all over again in selection and tactics. From the outside, it seems to me the players are too powerful. It is all lovely and nice in the setup but I have never seen lovely and nice win World Cups.”

With England’s World Cup defense hanging in the balance, all eyes will be on how they respond in their upcoming matches. Can they overcome their current slump and navigate to the knockout stages, or will Vaughan’s prediction of a looming transition become a harsh reality?
