During the 37th match of the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 between Bangladesh and Nepal, a controversy took place involving a late review decision. This incident occurred when Bangladesh’s Jaker Ali appeared to seek input from the dressing room before advising Tanzim Hasan Sakib to take a very late review after being given out lbw off Sandeep Lamichhane’s delivery.
The controversial incident took place in the 14th over of Bangladesh’s innings. Lamichhane had Tanzim trapped on the pads, and the umpire had no hesitation in raising his finger. As Tanzim began walking off, non-striker Jaker Ali immediately turned towards the Bangladesh dressing room. Just as the Decision Review System (DRS) timer was about to expire, Ali signaled to Tanzim to challenge the umpire’s call.
Replays indicated that the ball would have missed the leg stump, leading to the on-field decision being overturned. However, Tanzim failed to stay for long at the crease as Lamichhane bowled him out with a googly on the very next ball.

This incident brought attention to Article 3.2.3 of the tournament’s playing conditions, which states that umpires can reject a review if they suspect players have received input from off the field, such as from the dressing room. Additionally, Article 2.15 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct prohibits players from seeking off-field assistance for making review decisions, with possible penalties including suspensions. While the umpires allowed the review to proceed during the match, both Ali and Tanzim could face charges for a Level 3 offense if found guilty of violating these rules.

Despite the controversy, Bangladesh managed to pull of a 21-run victory over Nepal at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, solidifying their place in the Super Eights. Chasing a target of 107, Nepal found themselves struggling at 26/5, but a 52-run partnership between Kushal Malla and Dipendra Singh Airee revived their innings.
However, Mustafizur Rahman’s three-wicket haul and Tanzim’s four-wicket performance swung the match back in Bangladesh’s favour. With 22 runs needed off the final over, Shakib Al Hasan took two wickets to clinch the win.

The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh team will now turn their focus to making the most of the Super Eight stage, with aspirations of advancing to the tournament’s final rounds. They are placed in Group 1, where their first challenge will be against the 2021 champions, Australia, on June 21, followed by matches against India and Afghanistan.
