Australian veteran David Warner, with his international career nearing its end, has identified a rising star in the form of explosive young batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk (JFM). Warner, impressed by JFM’s dazzling performance in the recently concluded IPL season, believes the “Baby Bull” has the potential to excel in white-ball cricket. However, Warner also cautioned JFM about the significant differences between T20Is and ODI formats.

“He can lock it in,” David Warner stated, acknowledging JFM’s ability to dominate. However, Warner drew a parallel to his own early career, highlighting the importance of adapting to the demands of ODI cricket. “That’s one thing that I learnt from Twenty20,” he confessed, recalling his own struggles in the longer format after initial success in T20s. “I got dropped after seven games because I didn’t really understand how to play the game of one-day cricket.”

David Warner emphasized this crucial distinction, especially considering Australia’s reputation for boasting some of the best batting pitches in the world. He believes mastering the nuances of ODI batting will be key to JFM’s long-term success. Beyond technical prowess, Warner stressed the importance of mental resilience.

“Times have changed,” he acknowledged, referring to the relentless scrutiny of social media. He advised JFM to stay focused on run-scoring, the ultimate measure of a batsman’s value. “Hopefully doesn’t read too much into that, just sticks to what he knows best – that’s scoring runs, and that’s the biggest currency you can (have),” David Warner emphasized.

While the exact timeline remains uncertain, David Warner believes JFM’s potential for Test cricket hinges on his performance in the next year or so. “Will he play Test cricket? I think he’ll have to have a breakout year in the next 12-18 months to prove himself,” Warner stated. He pointed out that historically, consistent success in attaining centuries has been the standard for Test selection.
