Riyan Parag has come a long way. After enduring online abuse for his earlier performances in the IPL, the 22-year-old batsman has silenced his critics with a stellar 2024 season for Rajasthan Royals, amassing a staggering 573 runs and securing a coveted third place in the Orange Cap race. This impressive performance has earned him his maiden call-up to the Indian national team for the upcoming Zimbabwe series.

Standing on the cusp of his international debut, Riyan Parag reflects on his past struggles and future aspirations. Representing India has always been his ultimate dream, and he acknowledges the significance of this milestone. He emphasizes that the IPL shouldn’t be the sole objective, as a single good season doesn’t guarantee a long career.

Riyan Parag’s focus is on consistent performance and cementing his place in the Indian team. He believes international cricket will pave a clear path for him and inspire young players from his region.

“Growing up, I felt people from our region limit themselves from dreaming big. I want to change that,” Riyan Parag asserts. “I’m not there yet, but I want to play for the country. Once I do, people will see they can have a roadmap, a path inspired by someone from their own backyard.” He recognizes the impact his success can have on aspiring cricketers back home in Assam, demonstrating that talent and dedication can propel anyone, regardless of their background, to the national stage.

However, Riyan Parag’s journey hasn’t been smooth sailing. He’s faced harsh online criticism for his previous performances and even some off-field remarks. While admitting it wasn’t easy to deal with the constant trolling, he maintains he didn’t deserve all the negativity. He used this criticism as fuel for his comeback, determined to prove his doubters wrong.

“It’s not easy,” Riyan Parag concedes, “but after last year, I had a self-reflection session. This comeback is personal. I had to put up with things I didn’t deserve. Maybe I made mistakes in preparation, but I always put in my best effort. People change on a whim, just like a switch. Last year they said I wasn’t good enough for the IPL, and now they want me in the Indian team.”
