Gautam Gambhir Named Head Coach Of Senior India Men’s Team

Former India opener and the mentor of KKR, Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the India Men’s senior team. BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the news on Tuesday. He will take over the reins from Rahul Dravid, under whom India recently won the T20 World Cup in 2024. Moreover, India reached the final of the ICC World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup in 2023 as well.

However, Gambhir doesn’t have any coaching experience but he has served as a mentor in multiple IPL teams, including Kolkata Knight Riders this season. And, under his guidance, KKR clinched the title earlier this year.

“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team,” Jay Shah wrote on X. “Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.”

“His clear vision for Team India, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. TheBCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey,” he further added.

However, Rahul Dravid stepped down from the role following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the USA and West Indies last month as well. Meanwhile, Jay Shah also lauded Rahul Dravid’s contribution.

He wrote on X, “I express my sincere thanks and gratitude to Mr Rahul Dravid whose highly successful tenure as the Head Coach draws to a close. Under his guidance, #TeamIndia emerged as a dominant force across formats, including being crowned ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions! 🇮🇳
