However, on Friday, July 12, Star Sports shared a video where Gambhir spoke about his mentality during his illustrious playing career as well. He also said that he tried to be as honest to his profession as possible and the results followed too as well. The veteran also stated that it is important for players to do what they feel is right without having a thought of the obstacles they might face.
“There’s only one message, that try and play with honesty. Try and be as honest as you can to your profession. Obviously, results will follow. When I picked up the bat, I never thought of results. I never thought that I’m going to score these many runs. I’ve always believed that I have to be as honest as I can to my profession. Live on certain principles, live on certain values. Try and do the right things. Try and do things even if you think the whole world is against you. But your heart believes that you’re doing the right thing for the best interest of the team,” Gautam Gambhir said in the video.
Gambhir also said that his actions were always in the best interest of the team as well. He also urged the youngsters to always try and deliver what their teams need without thinking about their personal benefits as well.
“Whether I’ve been aggressive on the cricket field, whether I’ve had confrontations with people, just because it was all in the best interest of the team. Try and do that, because ultimately it’s the team that matters, not an individual. So, go out there and only think of one thing, that try and make your team win. Whichever team you play for, because that is what team sports demands. It is not an individual sport where you think about your own self. It is a team sport, where it is the team that comes first. You’re probably the last one that comes in the entire line-up,” Gautam Gambhir concluded.
However, Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach, will take charge from the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, where India are all set to play three T20Is and as many ODIs. The T20I series will take place in Pallekele before the action shifts to Colombo for the 50-over matches as well.
