After leading India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 held in the West Indies and USA, cricket legends Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirement from T20 internationals. Rohit and Kohli have ended their illustrious T20I careers as the top two leading run-scorers in the shortest format. Their retirement signals a significant transition period for India in T20Is.
In his first press conference as the head coach of the Indian team, Gautam Gambhir shared substantial updates regarding Team India’s future strategies. He hinted at the potential of India having distinct squads for Tests, ODIs, and T20Is in the future, reflecting the changing dynamics of modern cricket.
Addressing reporters in Mumbai on Monday, July 22, ahead of India’s departure for Sri Lanka, Gautam Gambhir stated, “Eventually, these things happen. For example, with Virat, Rohit, and Ravindra not being part of T20Is anymore, a transition is inevitable. However, I can’t confirm right now that we will definitely have three different teams. The T20 format will obviously evolve with three world-class players retiring from it.”

He further elaborated on the approach for ODIs and Test cricket, saying, “In 50-over and Test cricket, consistency is key. The more players who can perform across both formats, the better it is for any team. That’s my perspective. The chairman may have his views, but this is how I see it.”
Ajit Agarkar, India’s chief selector, echoed Gambhir’s sentiments during the press meeting. He emphasized the importance of balance and flexibility in team selection.
“We’re on the same page. The aim isn’t to deliberately create three different teams. If we have players who excel in all three formats, they should be included because they are exceptional players. It’s about finding the best balance for each format. Whether we use the same players across all formats or different ones depends on what works best for the team at the time. Currently, there are enough players capable of playing all three formats, so we try to pick the best 15,” Agarkar explained.

Following Rohit’s retirement, Suryakumar Yadav has been named as India’s new captain for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, starting in Pallekele on July 27. This series will mark the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket as they adapt to the absence of some of their most influential players.
