San Francisco Unicorns defeated Texas Super Kings in the Major League Cricket 2024 Challenger on July 26 to make it to the final. First to bat, the Unicorns posted a strong 200-run total, thanks to Fin Allen’s 101 off 53 balls. The chase of this stiff target was going on the right track for Texas Super Kings with Devon Conway and Faf du Plessis in the middle, till Corey Anderson’s brilliant athletic effort turned things around.

Within the fifth over, Texas had already put up 55 runs on the board with just 4.1 overs bowled by Carmi le Roux, who offered a back-of-a-length delivery, angling across Faf du Plessis and seemingly wide. The Texas skipper reached out and prodded, toe-ending the ball towards mid-off. Another day, it would have been beyond the fielder; this time, though, Corey Anderson read the trajectory perfectly. He waited, jumped superbly, and with his left hand pulled off a stunner of a catch.

Corey Anderson spoke reflectively on the catch, “It was moments like that which will help us going further. Faf has been playing well throughout the tournament, so that catch helped us to stall some of the momentum away from them.”

Du Plessis, who had been going great guns, was dismissed after a brisk 45 off 22 balls, leaving Conway, who remained unbeaten on 62 off 38 deliveries, to anchor the innings. Well, unfortunately for Texas, none of the other batters came up with a sizable contribution, and the required run rate grew incrementally. Josh Tromp did fight back with an excellent unbeaten 56 off 36 balls, but his efforts proved insufficient as San Francisco pulled off a narrow win by 10 runs.

After the game, he mentioned, “I thought 185 was a par score here. We started off well with the bat, and it was important to break the match in the powerplay, but we lost quick wickets in the middle overs. We did show a lot of fight in the back-end, but left too much in the end.”
