Sam Curran was on fire at The Hundred 2024, guiding London Spirit against Oval Invincibles at Lord’s on Sunday, August 4. Since then, with the great display by the Northampton-born all-rounder, Sam Billings’ side coasted to a comfortable 30-run victory, taking them to the top of the points table.
While opener Dawid Malan scored a decent 38 off 29 balls in the first innings, none of the other top-order batters could make any appreciable contribution. The real piece of magic was worked by Curran at number five, though, with 51* in just 22 balls, hitting six towering sixes. He propelled the Invincibles to 147/5 in their quota of 100 balls. Olly Stone, Liam Dawson, Dan Lawrence, and Matthew Critchley captured one wicket each for London Spirit.

London Spirit began their chase with good speed but quickly fell behind as the spin of the Invincibles came into play, tearing the top five batters apart. The rest of the damage was inflicted by Curran. He did get off with the wicket of Critchley, who was clean-bowled with the 87th ball of the innings, but it was followed by a dot ball, and directly afterward, he got the wicket of Liam Dawson and Olly Stone.

And then, one ball after another, the curious case of Curran unfolded at Lord’s on Monday evening as he picked up another wicket before the game’s first hat-trick. Four deliveries later, Curran had the upper hand again with Daniel Worrall removed to fold up the innings.
The London Spirit was bowled out for only 117 runs, after having faced just 95 balls. Tom Curran’s stunning bowling figures read 5/16 in 20 balls, which included a dot count of 11 in those balls. His fine all-round effort earned him the Player of the Match award.

With three wins in his pocket out of four games played, his Invincibles team sits atop the standings, while the London Spirit are at sixes and sevens with one win and three losses. Theirs was an all-round fine contribution with bat and ball, as Curran’s efforts helped in getting a vital win for Oval Invincibles.
