There is never a dull moment with the presence of Rohit Sharma on the cricket field. Rohit has imbibed that small element of fun and kept the fans on their toes through his grooving, if not him. His energies seem highly infectious, and his cheer always remains very high when he is on a cricket ground.
Rohit Sharma was back in his jovial self on Wednesday when he walked out in the middle of the R. Premadasa Stadium, getting a laugh or two. The experienced batsman came in a funny and creative way to encourage his bowlers as the Indian side looked to restrict Sri Lanka to a paltry score.
Most Indian bowlers have stated that Rohit Sharma has been a leader and a motivator for them. The Indian captain this time around showed his unique way when he used a phrase in Sinhala-language spoken in Sri Lanka—to egg on his bowlers. Rohit was heard using the phrase in the seventh over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Axar Patel was bowling.

In what was a humorous moment, soon after Axar had delivered the fifth ball of the over, Rohit called out a couple of phrases that roughly translate for “That’s right, that’s right.” Much to the wicketkeeper’s, Rishabh Pant’s, amusement, it ended a funny moment in the game, re-affirming Rohit’s value in keeping the spirits high within the team.

By the time of filing this report, Sri Lanka was 93 for 1 in 22 overs. Actually, the hosts of the series had won the toss and batted first. The openers of the hosts, Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando, reinforced the decision by adding 89 for the first wicket. The show was finally broken by Axar Patel, who got the better of Nissanka lbw in front of the wickets for 45 in the 20th over.

At that point, Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis were going good in the middle, trying to add to the fine start by the openers. The Sri Lankans had put themselves in an excellent position to claim the match with the thrills and spills of this layered Test and a series lead of 1-0 up for grabs at 2-1. And India’s flawless record of never losing a one-day series against the island nation since 1997 was in the balance.
Down to a decider, Rohit soldiered on in his own spirited manner as the captain of India’s bowlers, who were looking to keep their noses above water and not have an ignominious series defeat on their record.
