MS Dhoni is easily one of India’s best captains, who led the side to victory in three big tournaments: T20 World Cup 2007, World Cup 2011, and Champions Trophy 2013. His leadership also tasted immense success in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he led Chennai Super Kings to five titles. Another noted captain who has come very close to Dhoni’s record is Rohit Sharma, with five IPL titles won for the Mumbai Indians.
Recently, Rohit Sharma led Team India to the title in T20 WC 2024, adding yet another glittering jewel to his illustrious career. He became the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to win a World Cup title.

When asked which one of the two captains is better between Dhoni and Rohit, to which Shardul Thakur has played under both, he reacted light-heartedly. He turned towards Dhoni and said, “Rohit is my friend first, so I would say MSD. He will understand even if he feels angry. I would go and butter him up saying, ‘Rohit, no problem!’ When this video reaches him, he will be his typical cheeky self in the response.”

Both Dhoni and Rohit are no longer captains in the IPL, with Dhoni stepping down from leading the Chennai Super Kings, while Rohit has announced his retirement from T20 internationals. Immediately after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win, Rohit announced retirement from the T20 format but will continue to captain the team in Test and ODI formats.

Other key players followed suit, including Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. The move paved the way for Suryakumar Yadav to be a new T20I captain. “This was my last game in the T20 format. I’ve enjoyed every moment since I started playing it. It’s the perfect time to say goodbye to this format, having achieved what I wanted – to win the cup,” said Rohit Sharma after winning T20 World Cup 2024.
