Veteran allrounder Shakib Al Hasan dropped a straightforward catch of Akash Deep, denying Taskin Ahmed a much-deserved wicket during Day 2 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai. The incident occurred in the morning session when Taskin bowled the fifth ball of the 85th over of India’s first innings.

Taskin delivered a short-of-a-length ball that Akash Deep attempted to pull towards midwicket. However, the ball caught the upper edge of Akash’s bat, sending it high into the air. Shakib, positioned at square leg, ran back to catch the ball. But he seemed unsettled as he moved toward it, and his discomfort showed when he tried to take the catch over his shoulder.

Despite having plenty of time to position himself, Shakib spilled the catch, much to the frustration of Taskin Ahmed, who was left visibly disappointed. This moment added to the drama of the Test match, which had already seen its fair share of ups and downs.

On Day 1, Ravichandran Ashwin played a resilient and crucial knock to rescue India after their top order collapsed. Bangladesh’s pacer Hasan Mahmud had wreaked havoc early on, removing Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), Virat Kohli (6), and Rishabh Pant (39), leaving India struggling at 144-6.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had shown some fight with a gritty 56 before falling to Nashid Rana, but the spotlight was on Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who put together a crucial partnership. Ashwin, attacking the bowlers, remained unbeaten on 102, while Jadeja supported him with a composed 86. The pair’s unbeaten 195-run stand took India to 339/6 at the end of Day 1, turning the tide after a rocky start.
