Musheer Khan, the promising young batter from Mumbai and brother of Sarfaraz Khan, is facing a significant setback after suffering a fracture in a road accident while travelling in Uttar Pradesh. Musheer was en route to Lucknow with his father and coach, Naushad Khan, for the upcoming Irani Cup when the incident occurred. As a result of this unfortunate accident, he is expected to miss the match, according to reports from the Times of India.

Details surrounding the accident are still unclear, including whether Naushad sustained any injuries. This injury could potentially affect Musheer’s participation in the early stages of the Ranji Trophy as well. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a stellar run in domestic cricket this year, having also represented India in the U-19 World Cup earlier in 2024.

In his first-class career for Mumbai, Musheer has scored an impressive 716 runs in just nine matches, while also contributing with eight wickets. During the U-19 World Cup, he was a standout performer, finishing as India’s highest run-scorer and second-highest overall with 360 runs in seven matches, boasting an impressive average of 60.

Musheer’s recent performance in the Duleep Trophy, where he scored a magnificent 181 runs in his debut for India B against India A, has only solidified his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket. His anticipated absence from the Irani Cup and the initial rounds of the Ranji Trophy will leave a noticeable gap in Mumbai’s lineup as they aim to defend their title.

This injury comes as a disappointment, especially considering Musheer’s exceptional domestic performances had put him in contention for a spot on India A’s shadow tour of Australia this winter. His achievements in the Ranji Trophy last season, coupled with his recent century in the Duleep Trophy, had made him a strong candidate for selection for the tour Down Under.

Now, with his injury, his participation is uncertain. While the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has yet to release an official statement regarding the accident, reports indicate that selectors are expected to announce a replacement for Musheer in the Irani Cup squad. He was poised to open for Mumbai in the upcoming fixture.

Meanwhile, Musheer’s brother, Sarfaraz, is currently with the Indian team in Kanpur. Although he is not in the playing XI, he has been actively participating as a substitute fielder during the first Test of the series in Chennai. Sarfaraz made his debut for India earlier this year during the home Test series against England, highlighting the family’s growing presence in Indian cricket.
