Former Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who played in two Tests and three ODIs for the Men in Blue in the mid-1990s, was appointed as the bowling coach for the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Mhambrey’s return to MI was announced on Wednesday, October 16, and he will join forces with current bowling coach Lasith Malinga to bolster the team’s bowling attack.

In an official statement, MI expressed excitement over Paras Mhambrey’s reappointment, saying, “Mumbai Indians today announced the return and appointment of Paras Mhambrey as bowling coach, who will work alongside current bowling coach Lasith Malinga as part of the coaching team under Head Coach Mahela Jayewardene.”

Mhambrey is no stranger to the MI setup, having previously been part of the coaching staff that led the franchise to several triumphs, including the IPL 2013 title and Champions League T20 wins in 2011 and 2013. His experience and knowledge of the team dynamics could prove invaluable in helping MI return to winning ways. His most recent role was as the bowling coach for the Indian men’s cricket team, which culminated in India’s T20 World Cup victory earlier this year.

Mhambrey’s return follows the reappointment of former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayewardene as MI’s head coach. Under Jayewardene’s previous leadership, the team clinched IPL titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020, all under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

After a disappointing IPL 2024 season, where the Mumbai Indians managed only four wins from 14 matches and finished at the bottom of the table under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, the franchise is keen to bounce back in 2025 and claim their sixth IPL title.

As the IPL 2025 season approaches, the focus will also shift to the player retention decisions ahead of the mega auction. Teams are allowed to retain up to six players, including one uncapped Indian player. With a star-studded lineup featuring the likes of Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav, MI will have tough choices to make as they look to rebuild their squad for a title run.
