Legendary South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has announced his decision to part ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he served as the bowling coach. This means that Steyn will not be a part of the franchise for the upcoming IPL 2025 season, marking the end of his coaching stint with the team.

Steyn joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in late 2021, officially taking up the role of bowling coach for the IPL 2022 season. At that time, Tom Moody was at the helm as head coach. The coaching staff underwent significant changes over the years, with Brian Lara succeeding Moody in 2023, only to be replaced the following year by former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, making Steyn’s departure part of a broader coaching reshuffle.

The announcement of Dale Steyn’s exit came through his social media, where he expressed gratitude towards the franchise for their support during his tenure. While he confirmed his non-participation in IPL 2025, Steyn reassured fans that he would continue his coaching journey with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, where he serves as head coach in the SA20 league.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Dale Steyn wrote, “A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa.” He further added, “Two-time winners here in SA20, let’s try to make it THREE in a row.”

Sunrisers Eastern Cape has established itself as the most successful franchise in the SA20 league, clinching titles in both seasons held thus far, under the captaincy of Aiden Markram.

On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad had a commendable run in IPL 2024, finishing as runners-up after a valiant effort in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders. The franchise had struggled in previous seasons but displayed significant improvement last year under captain Pat Cummins. However, Steyn was not part of the coaching staff during IPL 2024, opting out for personal reasons. His absence led to the appointment of James Franklin as interim bowling coach, a position Franklin is likely to retain following Steyn’s exit.
