KL Rahul’s spot in India’s playing XI is under scrutiny following a disappointing performance in the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, where he managed just 12 runs. With rising stars like Shubman Gill set to return and Sarfaraz Khan in tremendous form, Rahul faces mounting pressure as India prepares for the second Test in Pune.
Despite performing well in earlier series against South Africa, England, and Bangladesh, his recent struggles could jeopardize his place in the team. India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, acknowledged the stiff competition for spots within the squad, indicating that Rahul’s position is not guaranteed.

Speaking at a press conference, ten Doeschate shared that multiple players, including Rahul, are vying for a place in the XI. However, the former Netherlands cricketer also emphasized that Rahul is handling the pressure well and remains in a good mental space despite the uncertainty surrounding his selection.
“There’s a fight for the spot. Sarfaraz was brilliant. I went to KL after the last game and asked how many balls you missed, and there were none. He’s in a good space, but we’ll have to see how things fit,”Ryan ten Doeschate said during the media interaction.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who missed the Bengaluru Test due to a stiff neck, is set to make his return for the second Test. Gill had been in excellent form in the series against England and Bangladesh, and his presence will be crucial as India looks to level the series, trailing 0-1 against New Zealand. Sharing an update on Gill’s fitness, ten Doeschate confirmed that the young batter has recovered and is ready to play.

“He’s had a slight discomfort, but he batted for a long time in practice, and he’ll be fine for this Test,” the coach added.
The competition for spots is heating up, and Rahul’s future in the playing XI may hinge on his performance in the coming matches.
