In a tense yet unexpectedly humorous moment during the first Test match between Bangladesh and South Africa, a mix-up in the field lightened the mood. Bangladesh’s fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was at the center of this comedic mishap when he unintentionally hit South African lower-order batter Dane Piedt with a wild throw amid a run-out confusion during the first innings.
The day began with overnight batters Wiaan Mulder and Kyle Verreynne resuming their confident partnership. They managed to stitch together a 119-run stand for the seventh wicket, offering some much-needed stability to South Africa’s innings. Both Mulder and Verreynne completed well-fought half-centuries, countering the tricky Bangladesh spin attack.
However, just when it seemed like the Proteas were in control, Hasan Mahmud turned the tide by dismissing Mulder and Keshav Maharaj in consecutive deliveries, reducing South Africa to 227/8. It was at this point that Dane Piedt joined Verreynne at the crease, and what followed was a comical sequence of events that had both players and spectators chuckling.

The incident occurred on the final ball of the 69th over. Hasan Mahmud bowled a low full toss, which Piedt drove straight back towards the bowler. The ball deflected off Mahmud’s hand and struck the stumps at the non-striker’s end, with Verreynne safely in his crease.

However, Piedt mistakenly sprinted for a run, only to realize that Verreynne hadn’t moved. In his attempt to scramble back, Mahmud threw the ball towards the stumps but inadvertently struck Piedt on the thigh. The lighthearted moment quickly spread on social media, providing a break from the otherwise intense match.

By the end of the day, South Africa had seized control, with Verreynne going on to score a magnificent century. He amassed 114 runs off 144 balls, supported by Piedt’s crucial knock of 82 from 87 balls, helping their team post a total of 308, giving them a commanding 202-run lead.
