In the second innings of the ongoing Pune Test against New Zealand, India’s seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was entrusted with the new ball, a testament to his skill and India’s pressing need for an early breakthrough. The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium pitch offered plenty of turns, creating an ideal setting for Ashwin to weave his spin magic.

Despite the favourable conditions, the veteran off-spinner and his teammates found themselves in a challenging position, needing more than a steady spell to save the game. Earlier, India had been bowled out for a mere 156, giving New Zealand a substantial first-innings lead of over 100 runs.

As Ravichandran Ashwin took charge with the new ball, he immediately created an opportunity, narrowly missing a breakthrough that could have lifted the team’s spirits.  In a pivotal moment, Ashwin bowled a deceptive arm ball from a teasing length that slipped under Tom Latham’s bat as the batter attempted a sweep.

The ball struck Tom Latham’s back thigh, and while Ravichandran Ashwin’s confident appeal for LBW was initially turned down, captain Rohit Sharma quickly called for a review. However, the decision stood due to an “umpire’s call” on impact, allowing New Zealand skipper Tom Latham a lucky reprieve.

The decision left Ashwin visibly frustrated, his agitation apparent as he exchanged words with umpire Richard Illingworth, a rare show of emotion for the usually composed spinner. Ashwin’s teammate Virat Kohli shared his frustration, watching the replays closely and showing disappointment at the missed opportunity.

The setback highlighted the mounting pressure on the Indian side, as they continued to grapple with an unsteady batting performance and limited options for a comeback. Ashwin’s close call illustrated how critical each wicket was, with New Zealand’s commanding position making India’s chances of winning seem increasingly bleak. With the team still trailing, India’s spinners will have to deliver their very best to make any inroads and bring India back into the game.
