Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is gearing up for his comeback after a prolonged absence due to an ankle injury. Sidelined since the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia, Shami has been working tirelessly to regain his competitive edge. His return to the field is set to begin with two Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal, which will serve as crucial warm-up games before the high-stakes Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series against Australia, starting later this year.

Shami’s road to recovery has included Achilles tendon surgery, and he’s gradually returned to training, intensifying his efforts in the nets. Bengal’s team management is hopeful about his participation in the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches.

As per Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Shami will miss the immediate match against Kerala but is expected to join the squad in Bengaluru for Rounds 3 and 4, where Bengal will face Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. Laxmi Ratan Shukla underscored Shami’s value to Bengal and the national team, emphasizing that good performances in domestic matches would be beneficial before Australia.

“He’s not available for the Kerala game, but we’re optimistic about him joining us for Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh,” Laxmi Ratan Shukla shared with The Indian Express. He added, “Shami’s eager to play a couple of Ranji games before heading to Australia. His experience is invaluable, especially with four of our key players already committed to the national squad.”

Mohammed Shami’s involvement in the Ranji Trophy is a strategic step to gauge his fitness for the Australian tour. His presence will be vital, especially as India heads into a challenging series where every player’s form and fitness are paramount. With his precision and ability to swing the ball, Shami remains a key asset, and successful Ranji outings could position him as a significant force against Australia.
