Former India chief selector MSK Prasad recently voiced concerns over Virat Kohli’s form ahead of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Kohli’s recent performances in Test cricket have fallen short of his typically high standards, raising questions about his readiness to face Australia in their home conditions.
The 35-year-old Kohli has managed just 88 runs in four innings in the current series against New Zealand, a follow-up to his lukewarm showing against Bangladesh, where he accumulated only 99 runs across four innings. Speaking on Star Sports’ show Follow the Blues, MSK Prasad highlighted the key role Kohli played in India’s historic 2018-19 series win in Australia, suggesting that Kohli’s form could make or break India’s upcoming campaign.
“If you look at the 2018 series, Kohli brought aggression to India’s batting lineup, while Cheteshwar Pujara anchored the innings with his solid defense. The balance of caution and aggression that Kohli and Pujara maintained was essential,” Prasad remarked, hinting at the unique synergy that powered India’s success in Australia.

During that series, Kohli scored 282 runs at an average of 40.28, complementing Pujara’s impressive 521 runs at an average of 74.42. Their contrasting styles allowed India to maintain momentum and control in tough Australian conditions.
Former India spinner Sunil Joshi also expressed confidence in Kohli’s potential for a comeback on Australian soil, emphasizing the critical importance of Kohli’s contributions to India’s World Test Championship (WTC) qualification hopes. With WTC points at stake, Kohli’s performance in Australia could determine India’s standing.
“Pujara was India’s solid foundation, while Kohli brought the fire. His aggression not only impacted the scoreboard but also inspired the team. Given the importance of the WTC points system, Kohli’s form is absolutely essential,” MSK Prasad added.

However, Sunil Joshi is optimistic. “I’m a hundred percent confident about Kohli’s ability to rise on big occasions. He may not have hit his stride here in India, but we’ve seen him thrive against top teams under pressure,” he said, voicing his belief in Kohli’s ability to shine when it matters most.
