Shikhar Dhawan has come forward to defend Rohit Sharma following India’s disappointing performance in the home Test series against New Zealand, where Rohit became the first Indian captain to lose such a series on home soil. Dhawan emphasized that it would be unfair to scrutinize Rohit’s leadership abilities based on a single series defeat, particularly after his remarkable success in leading India to the T20 World Cup title in June.
Rohit’s captaincy during the series has faced criticism, with several of his decisions leaving fans and experts puzzled. One notable moment was his choice to bat first after winning the toss in the first Test in Bengaluru, despite overcast conditions that traditionally favour bowlers.
In the second Test in Pune, renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar described Rohit as a defensive captain, highlighting how his conservative field placements allowed New Zealand to accumulate crucial runs.

Defending his close friend, Shikhar Dhawan told IndiaToday, “The pressure you all talk about isn’t something we feel. While there is pressure in the game, we don’t dwell on losses or wins; that’s part of the game. I feel that’s neither a fair nor a practical approach toward anything.” Dhawan praised Rohit’s leadership qualities, asserting that he has successfully brought the team together over the years.
“From a cricketer’s perspective, we don’t think that way. Rohit is a great leader; it’s not just about winning and losing. There’s a bond, a connection between the team and its leader, and the respect they have for him,” Shikhar Dhawan stated.
India’s losses in the first two Tests have left them trailing 0-2 in the three-match series, significantly jeopardizing their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. To secure a spot, they need to win four of their remaining six Tests, with five of those matches against the current WTC champions, Australia.

As India prepares to face Australia, they will be without Rohit for at least one of the first two Tests. While some fans have expressed concern over this development, Dhawan remains optimistic about the team’s prospects in Australia. “India will do very well in Australia. Whether he plays the first match or not, of course, his presence and experience will be missed. But I am sure the boys are very, very professional and will perform well,” he concluded, reinforcing his belief in the team’s capabilities and resilience.
